Original old antique Santos, Philippines Spanish Colonial Religious Imagery

During the 19th century while under Spanish rule religious images were very popular with the mostly Catholic population of the Philippines. Large , ornate and expensive pieces could be found in churches but every home rich or humble would have a family shrine with a Madonna , figure of Christ or Saint carved from wood and painted. Toward the end of the 19th century mass produced statues made from painted plaster of Paris imported from industrialized Europe put an end to this traditional art form. During the 1950s local collectors started to show an interest in the old wooden statues and preserved many beautiful pieces in private and public collections. Prices and interest appreciated and by 1980 most of the material had disappeared from the art market. The pieces are listed individually in separate offers. (23 January 1350 5 April 1419) was a Valencian. Who gained acclaim as a missionary. He is honored as a saint. Of the Roman Catholic Church. Vincente Ferrer is one of the most beloved Saints in the Philippines and is often depicted in woodcarvings only rivaled by San Roque. This is a larger statue standing 24″ tall on top of a 4″ platform and weighs 14 lbs. Carved from tropical hardwood with traces of gesso and polychrome paint. He dates to about 1850AD. Condition good , consistent with age and as illustrated. There are no hidden flaws. He platform on which he stands is later and made from softwood. I think Japanese packing crates judging from the stencil marks on the under side and maybe WWII era. It has’ Maria’ written on the front panel and is a little small for the large statue. San Ferrer had wings when he was first carved. These fragments of tin are all what remains. His head and raised right arm are carved separately as it was the practice and plug into the body. They could be secured with a dab of adhesive. After a lifetime of collecting Dallasartsnet is liquidating its extensive collection of art. Should there ever be a problem I will. Work it out with you.
